Military Institute of Armenia

The Izmirlian Foundation has played an invaluable role in supporting the Armenian Army in the hardest times, when independent Armenia was just trying to create it's own statehood.

Armenia was facing hard times: earthquake, war, blockade, energy crisis, collapsed economy, refugees, food shortages and many more.

There was a critical need for help! And the sons of Armenia abroad heard the call of the homeland. Among them, and one of the first was the Izmirlian family from Switzerland.

The Armenian Army was formed parallel to the reestablishment of Armenia’s independent state and became its first achievement. However, it was not easy to create a modern regular army in such a short time. One of the major and very important issues for the Armenian army was the education and training of future military officers of Armenia. And the Izmirlian Foundation helped the country to create its first and the most important military educational institution.

With a huge donation the Izmirlian Foundation constructed practically all the major buildings and facilities of the Military Institute of Armenia: barracks, kitchen, water supply facilities, canteen, large and small boiler buildings and the equipment were constructed in 1997-2000. The opening ceremony took place in 1997 and representatives of the Izmirlian Foundaiton took part in this memorable event. Dikran Izmirlian, Chairman of the Izmirlian Foundation and Vazgen Sargsyan, Minister of Defense of Armenia, opened the Military Institute of Armenia in presence of guests, government officials and media representatives, in parallel to the national anthem, sung by the young students.

In 1998 the Military Institute gave its first graduates. In 1999, by the decree of the President of Armenia the Military Institute was renamed to Vazgen Sargsyan Military Institute, in memory of Armenia's National Hero, who tragically died in a terrorist attack of October 27, 1999.

By another decree of the President of Armenia, the Military Institute was given a Combat Flag as a symbol of military dignity, glory, and valor. Since 2003, the Military Institute became a full member of Armenia’s Council of State Higher Educational Institutions.
